… After lunch I tidied up and arranged my dark room … the dark room lamp Mommy has got me is lovely, but has only a yellow filter so I can’t develop yet … zph

On [a] walk … I got several pieces of bomb, and we visited the land mine hole where there were several pieces of parachute. A longish walk, rather tired when I got back… [This was the willow herb patch we had visited before.] zwk zwp

 

Thursday 3rd

… all went for a walk. We went up the green slope, round in the woods and down by the new gash. Martin [my brother who was on leave] is always very tired and rather depressed. … zwk zfl zil

We had tea early and then Martin left—rather depressed and making Mommy depressed also. I began making the model Beaufort. … Two more Italian destroyers sunk, other news all good. zfl zil zcf zmd znb zwf

 

Saturday 5th

… Someone rang up saying “I have been told officially to tell you to take 3 days food and hide it”. Mommy said “Is there an invasion?”. “That’s all I’m to tell you, you know best what to do”, and rang off. Mommy, as the person gave no name, rang up people and the ARP (actually she got the police by mistake) and found that the order was about 3 months old.  Some silly fool to put it like that. … zwr zro zwe

 

Tuesday 8th

… Several planes, bangs and searchlights in the evening. The planes were leaving clearish white tracks. zar zad

Last night we did a very devastating raid on Kiel but the Germans are doing quite (too) well in the Balkans. zar zwe
