at Glatting

January

Monday 1st

Today is my last day at Glatting [before going to Cambridge]. … As nearly all the snow has gone, I spent the day in my house [a small hut]. Mother came to lunch, we had hot sardines on toast and cocoa, and lots more toast and some Glatting nuts. After lunch I tidied the house up and then read Lorna Doone as there is a lovely fire there.zfl zdc znb zfd zwr

After tea which I had indoors, I collected my belongings and pumped up the bicycle tires, as we are biking to the station tomorrow (Fittleworth). I had a farewell sit in my house, and then locked it up. zcy

to Cambridge

Tuesday 2nd

We had breakfast horribly early, and started out with Tinker [my Airedale] at about 9 o’cl. We bought some labels at Mrs. Harris’, and corrected a hitch in the little racer which I was riding, and then we had to walk down Sutton Hill as that was the one place they hadn’t sanded! zcy ztv zpt

We went on our way, getting very cold, and going slowly down all hills with our feet on the ground until we eventually reached Fittleworth. Here we found that Mother had bought us bike tickets which said we had to accompany the bikes—right across London and changing at E. Croydon. However, we lost them so it was all right. At East Croydon we saw the balloon barrage [tethered balloons to deter low-flying attacking aircraft], which I had not done before. zcy ztv zad
