Friday 14th

… They were firing the guns on Trevose Head at a target. A lot of talk about invasion; there will certainly be a hellish lot of air raids. We did the biggest [raid] on Hamburg and got 11 of theirs down. 3 by ‘other means’. zwp zar zwe

I walked back by myself from games—so did Wood—sometimes he’s friendly and others not at all. I dunno at all. zfr zop

I got a letter from Mommy—the flat is blown up badly; they’ve got the furniture at Glatting… zfl zar

I went to see Max in the evening, for making an unnecessary noise while going downstairs to see Miss Macrae [matron] during 3rd Prep. He also talked to me for about 20 mins about various other subjects—I had a small streak of insolence which was a bad thing, and about Wood. A nice jaw for me, on the whole. zmb zsd ztc

Sunday 16th

… I read the ‘Good Companions’ [J.B. Priestley] until church … An invasion scare in the evening—the weather about perfect, I think the HG [Home Guard] are going out all night. zbn zwe zso zco zct

Monday 17th

HG only had to sleep in uniforms, and then go on patrol with fixed bayonets! Scare practically over. … zct zso zco

Tuesday 18th

… Went to see Winter—he asked if I was feeling argumentative. Then he began to discuss religion with me. First he said that until recently he had really been an atheist, but now he was a Christian—but a much better sort than most, for instance he does not really believe in the future life, and agrees that people who now call themselves Christians are not. He concluded that the chief difference  was that what he called God I called conscience. He is going to have another discussion; this lasted over an hour and we could have gone on. zpy zrl zag zsd
