A fine morning, but windy and clouded by 4 o’clock. … zwr
JTC—we did a tactical exercise which constituted getting fairly muddy and wet crawling about the headland. Not bad fun. … zct
Friday 14th
… A fairly wettish day. No hockey, instead we went out in sections of seven and had to get back to the Bay untouched by the defenders. Very good fun. I got caught 10 yds. from the door. We had another voluntary go. I was about ten yards ahead being chased by W and did an almighty slide for about 10ft. on my bottom, rather painful and I was caught. zwr zct zac
Saturday 15th
… Cruickshank asked me to take up bird watching seriously, as after the summer all the experts will have left. I decided I would, and Wood said he would too. It will be very good fun. zfr zwl
Sunday 16th
… off to Mr. Candler for Breakfast … A terrific head-on offshore wind, I had to walk a lot, and there was driving rain … good breakfast, then Butler and I shot at starlings with an antiquated air-gun. He killed one, I removed a few tail feathers. We then pruned an apple tree and I cut a dead one down. Quite fun. … ztc zwr zwp zwl zsu
After tea I went along to Baker’s Folly with Cruickshank where he had seen some Gannets. Rather fun, they dived into the water from flying with a terrific splash, like the Spitfire last term. zfr zwl zwc
