Monday 17th

… we went to a voluntary religious Passion play, by the Pilgrim Players, called ‘the Way of the Cross’. I hadn’t meant to go, but forgot to give my name in, and I enjoyed it when I was there. Mr. Trevor was acting. It was with practically no scenery, with wonderful acting. I do not understand what people see in that sort of thing though. … zth zrl

I’ve also got my first boil, on the back of my neck—painful, a bit. zil

Sunday 23rd

… A stray barrage balloon was shot down about 6 miles away. zad

A lovely day. At 10.15 Cruickshank, G and I went off to the Gannel. We saw a Whirlwind doing its stuff on the way. We saw when we got there: about 12 ringed-plovers, two partridges, redshank, a good flock of gulls which two fools (D and someone) scared before we could have a good look. Then we saw our first notable bird—a buzzard. Shortly after I put up a Jack Snipe from under my feet. zwr zpp zwl

We got back, and found that G  had two oiled up live Guillemots  (we had seen a dead one). During rest we saw about 12 on the beach, rocks and in the sea, some dead. After lunch I photographed them—good light as there were few clouds all day. Cruickshank went to the Gannel and almost caught an oiled Razor-bill, and B found a Black Guillemots corpse. MFW saw a kingfisher on the Gannel. Rather a wonderful day! zwl zph zac

[Later I] watched the Guillemots being fed, only one ate anything. …Saw guillemots being washed in soap and later ether. zwl zac zmt
