Friday 7th

Benghazi captured. Italians running very fast. … zwf zlb

Played a pretty lousy game of hockey. I hit Aldridge’s bottom very hard with a hockey stick. He hit mine quite hard enough! … zsp zfg

 

Saturday 8th

… I had to go and see Winter. He asked me if I had spoken to Wood yet, I had to say no. Then he asked if it would help if he said something to Wood. I said it would, and told him about my views about an Atheist and a C. of E. being friends. He said he would speak to Wood, and that we must discuss it. He saw him as soon as he’d finished with me. When MF came back Cruickshank asked him if he’d had a nice time. Mart said “Yes, very”.   ? zsd zfr zem

 

Sunday 9th

…After lunch MF and I played darts, and bust one of Cruickshank’s, and then we walked up to Church. I asked him what he thought of my atheism etc., and if he felt we could be friends. He asked why I was one and I told him, but didn’t finish the conversation very satisfactorily. … zfr zgn zrl

Then at 9.0 we listened to a very good speech by the Prime Minister … zpl

 

Tuesday 11th

I was awake for about 1 hour from midnight because of my sore throat. A lovely night—full moon… zil

There was a frightfully good lecture in the evening. ‘Nature in the Wild’ by — Hoskin. He told several very good stories with wonderful slides. First he showed us several photos which he took from a hide of a buzzard on its nest. There were two young ones, and both parents came. He had sat quite still for 7 ½ hours while photographing them, and his legs and voice were quite gone. zlu zwl zph

Next he showed us wood pigeons, pied tree-creepers, greater spotted woodpeckers, a kingfisher, and some frightfully good flashlight photos of little owls. Lastly he told how a tawny owl had clawed his eye when he was going to the hide, and how he had very nearly died from loss of  zlu zwl zph zac
