Tuesday 11th

I stayed in bed all day and made the Gloster Gladiator. After tea, trying to make the Spitfire look better I ruined it, and so sandpapered it clean and wrote to Hamleys for some new transfers and paint … zil zmd

I was told to my great surprise that Italy had declared war on us yesterday, I wasn’t told then. Just as John goes to the Mediterranean. Got a good navy too. … zfl zsl zwg

 

Wednesday 12th

… The ‘Gladiator’ is finished and looks jolly good. I put a dashboard in yesterday. … Foul news, Germans advancing to Paris. French tiring. … zmd zlb

 

Friday 14th

On the one o’clock news the Germans were in Paris. French line unbroken but exhausted. Italians have done nothing, we captured  60 men, two officers and 33 machine guns with no casualties! … zlb

We heard where the school  are going. … We go to Newquay in Cornwall, on or before June 26th. … zev zsr

 

Saturday 15th

… Dr. Hopkinson lent me two bird magazines. He showed me round his garden. It is a very nice one but the rain has been so black, probably from smoke from the Great Battle, that lots of the flowers were black. … zwl zwr

 

Monday 17th 

… I spent the rest of the day reading ‘Beau Geste’ by P.C. Wren.  Daddy had had him as a patient once, and had asked him what his profession was! He said that he was an ex-soldier, and the next day Daddy got a present of two or three of his books. … zbn zfl zmw zso

Everyone very depressed as France has stopped fighting. Will we go on? zwg zem
