Friday 13th

Roger arrived at 1 o’clock (a.m.). I left for work before he woke—carting—loading for me. … zfr zhk

After tea we heard that a rear gunner had bailed out in the morning, and was believed to be 7 or 8 miles due south of Petworth, his plane having collided; we rang up the police, and then Mommy, Martin, Roger and I combed the woods from the pylon … along to Duncton hill—we could not do it thoroughly. The only other sign of  searchers was one Lysander for 5 mins.—no police on the downs … Absolutely exhausted, to bed. zfl zam zwk

 

Wednesday 18th

Binder again largely. New land girl—17—no chin and hunts and makes up. Work OK. Bathe in the evening—nice; then damn silly row with owners, because we took away a commando hand paddle which we found 5ft from the shore under water. … zhk zol zmb zgk

News—Sicily clear for 25 thousand casualties. Russians advancing— tough—1 mile from Kharkov. zlb zwc zru

 

Saturday 21st

Here my diary must return to proper length and legibility. The morning was grey, with downs at cloud level and frequent rain; … left work for good with 24/- in pocket. … zdw zwr zhk

Roger and I cycled in to a flick—a quite amusing Joe E. Brown film—anyhow I’m uncritical as I see so few. … zcy zfm

 

Sunday 22nd

A happy day. Margaret, Roger and I went out for a walk—over beyond Bignor hill—sunny and windy. We picked greengages, and I started on the ‘Fall of Paris’, Ehrenberg. … zwk zfl zfr zbn

 

Wednesday 25th

… Roger and I went up and dug for pottery. About 1.6 down, I found a marl paving stone—flat and horizontal; much pottery [later identified as Romano-British]. In this hole I found  four or five [pieces] of the same rim. … zfr zol
