Saturday 7th

First lecture was very good—Mrs. Mead, [Margaret Mead, anthropologist] a virile American on America—a strange approach but conciliated me; reasonable. The commission meetings morning and afternoon became heated on subject of political democracy, but eventually we did attain a reasonable and agreed decision. zic zlu zpn

ISC [Inter-Schools Committee] election today—my school being apathetic and not in reach of London, I could not stand, though I do believe (from indications) I’d have stood a goodish chance. And I’m going to try to get a thing going at school—’Society for Discussion of World Problems’—SDOWP (s’dope). … zic zpm

 

Sunday 8th

Summing up day. I spent the morning with Noah (a fellow commissioner), who was typing out our report. After lunch the reports of commissions—ours third—I read a little badly at first, but then ok—I think it was a good report. … zic

New girl friend—dark girl not really very pretty but damn nice. … She’s attached somehow to the ISC—a friend of our commission leader, YCLer Barbara P. zic zfr

 

Monday 9th

… busy before breakfast carry mattresses etc. about. New friend Eliz. came to my table—deeply honoured! After breakfast, many goodbyes, especially to Ursula (awful name, nice girl) and Elizabeth, neither of whose addresses do I know, or am I known, and I don’t know the latter’s name. zic zfr

I’d like to get up to the ISC dance on Sept 11 to meet all the many nice friends I’ve made here, but I can’t dance, have no party clothes, and would need other excuses also to go up—we’ll see. The friends I made here are the people I’ll probably like best in this country, and the more I see of them the better. … Decided not to go to lunch hour National Gallery concert, where many I knew were going, so caught 11.56. zic zfr

Now I will sum up the results of the Conference, because it is a place remembered from home, and the journey constitutes the re-adjustment zic
