Free day … I went towards Trenance not very far, biking leisurely along cliff paths—enjoying the solitude. On the way back, as I passed Mr. Crawshaw’s house, I saw him cleaning his windows. I offered to help, and he accepted, so reinforced with a cup of coffee, I cleaned 10 windows with him (he’s leaving this term). zcy ztc zdc
Over the coffee he discussed monastic segregation of Benenden and Gresham’s re: last Saturday’s effort. He was awfully reasonable—regarding a friendship between opposite sexes perfectly normal for a change. If he’d known, he’d have asked both parties to tea—a thing he’s done before. After lunch the usual lot of us + RJC went to Newquay beach to meet our fair ones. Six were forthcoming … They couldn’t stay as the tide cut them off—they had to paddle. 15 mins. only. They’d re-seen Shelly who’d been v. nice, but had forbidden writing. She’d appreciated our letter—we’d feared otherwise! Still shy in the flesh with them. … zso zse zsd zmb

Am reading my French prize—’Mission to Moscow’; some good criticisms—very good book I think for stimulating mental processes [it was by Joseph Davies, former US ambassador to Moscow: a broadly favourable view]. zbp
