Up at 5. Down to the station with AWW to see the girls off. We did, being observed by many of their mistresses and by Max. … zse zso

After breakfast went to station again to meet Margaret [my sister, who was going to cycle with me back to Glatting].

Left hotel at 10.30. Very good weather all day, with only a slight wind … Journey all very hilly. … to Wadebridge, which was further than expected, and then a distant and fairly hilly ride to the Camelford stn. zcy zwr

From here we were directed to Tintagel by a kind van driver, and there was a glorious down hill [ride] into the setting sun. We … were welcomed by Mrs. C and her sister [relatives] and some grand vegetable stew. … After supper the sister took us for a stroll and we saw Arthur’s castle and Merlin’s cave. … zcy zhy zss zfd

 

Wednesday 29th

We left, after despatching from our packs a heavy parcel of superfluities, at 9.30. It was raining a thin very wet drizzle, and we were soon soaked. We made quite good time to Launceston, however, where we had some dinner in a pub which did not seem to approve of us. zcy zwr

… we stopped for tea after a quick 500ft. climb past Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor. The country was hilly but almost too bare, with rocks lying everywhere on the surface. 12 miles past tea, after seeing the ugliness of Princeton gaol, we reached Bellever hostel after a cross country push. … zcy zss

 

Thursday 30th

… At first uphill, but then long glorious down ride off Dartmoor to the small town of Moreton Hampstead, built round a church on a hill. From here was a long climb through a different sort of country—smallish fields, all cultivated. We reached Exeter soon after 1 o’clock, and did there a little shopping.
