Monday 13th

… a letter for me from J, in reply to my letter telling of my beliefs etc. It was a very nice letter, and she is a socialist, which is good. However, she holds some strange reincarnation theory about future life—I will argue about this when next I see her. …  zfr  zse zrl zpn

After 3rd prep I went to see Max. “Hah! Lamentable behaviour in the Truro train”. It was all about Benenden etc., W had been before and told the whole story—Max had only been told about the train. zsd zmb zse

Then the garage business came in—we agreed that that seemed silly, and I made it clear that I felt no shame. He seemed to think that Miss Sheldon was livid with us—not the impression she gave us anyway. He was rude to me, and I did not mince words… zsd ztc zag zop

 

Wednesday 15th

3 exams. … Latin—nice … Tempest, which was easy but I didn’t do very well. … Chemistry, which I dreaded but eventually liked. Then we spent ½ an hour clearing the tables away for a dance band. … zex zsu

War news—Russia bad, Libya OK. Don well crossed, Rostov threatened now. Litvinov forecasts that 4th round will soon begin, knock out for Jerry. … zru zwf

 

Saturday 18th

… House match in the afternoon, and our Benenden friends had said they’d come if they could … Anyhow, they turned up, and in view but away from most people we spent about ¾ of an hour talking. … Unfortunately, we broke the promise made to Shelley and my conscience was very active. … zmb zse zsd zso

War news—Libya tank battle odds even at Alamein. Russia resistance stiffening in battle for Don, Voroshilovgrad fallen. zwf zlb zru
