… I wrote a joint letter with W to the Spectator about educational reforms—chiefly co-education… zpn znw zey zse
After lunch the same force as last time went out, having arranged to meet [the girls] down Henver Rd. However, as we approached the Hotel Bristol we saw three friends pointing down a side road, and eventually we were guided into one of the ‘Bristol’ garages. … Anyhow, we talked a bit about future arrangements, and they said that Miss Sheldon [headmistress] had forbidden us meeting, and they’d fetched us just to save us waiting hours for them. Then one of their housemistresses entered: “This isn’t a very satisfactory way is it, I think you’d better come up and see Miss Sheldon in her study”. zso zse zmb zsd
Our hearts increased their speed, but otherwise we remained firm and determined. We were led up to the study, followed by a crowd increasing in size. Then we followed the girls into the study, where we were greeted with an affable handshake from Miss Sheldon, the principal. Then she explained that she couldn’t have the two schools seen out together, but she saw our point, and did not think that we were wicked. She had tried to get dances and tennis, and she promised to try again. She also said that she’d ask us out to tea sometime. zso zse zmb zsd ztc
We agreed to be good and not meet on the sly, as she was reasonable, and her position was obviously difficult. We disagreed, however, about the theoretical side and we made it quite clear that the system should be changed. Then we trooped out under only J’s escort, and left followed by waves from the window. zso zse zmb zsd zey
W got a note, largely confidential, saying who’s keen on who. … We got back, and wrote a polite and appreciative letter to Miss Sheldon. … What would Mommy and Daddy think of this? Personally, I feel no shame, and see nothing wrong… zfr zse zmb zsd zfl
