[dentist], and had to wait one hour, during which I had a hair-cut. He said that my teeth were very good, and didn’t do anything. zmt

I went to Daddy’s room, and waited until he came at 12.40. Margaret arrived at about one o’clock, with a painful front tooth. We had lunch in a very crowded restaurant, no food shortage! and then bussed to D.H. Evans. The only damage I saw was round Guy’s, behind St Pauls, and John Lewis. When we had shopped we walked with Daddy to Victoria, via St. James Park. We caught the 3.48 [to Sussex]. … Not a bad day. It’s nice to see Daddy again. zfl zmt zfd zsh zar

Wednesday 16th

A lovely day, despite a brilliant orange sunset last night. Kenneth [my cousin], Margaret and I (and Tinker) went for a hot walk in the morning. First we went up Farm Hill, on the top of which we lay cooling for about ½ hour, while we watched planes making  trails in the sky at about 20,000 feet. Then we went down and round to the Ordnance survey beacon, and down to the tumulus to see the Isle of Wight … We didn’t because of the haze. Kenneth discovered an aerodrome about 7 miles off, it took me about 15 mins. to find it—Good camouflage! (or bad eyes?). zwr zfl zwk zam zss

I finished the Beaufort and hung it in my house, after lunch I went to see it, was readjusting it, when it fell on its back on the floor. Only the propeller was broken. I mended it with cold solder. zcf zmd zac

… A horrible lot of planes in the evening, more than I’ve ever heard before. I heard machine gun and cannon fire. zar zam

Thursday 17th

Daddy rang up earlyish, to say he was unhurt etc., but that they had had the worst raid ever, and that every block of the hospital not in use was demolished, and none of those in use were hit! zar zfl zmw

The day began misty, but cleared. While it was still misty, Kenneth and I started on a walk, without Tinker as he had run away. We went past Coldharbour [farm] straight over the top, from where we could see the sea, the puff of exploding bombs (which we also heard) and the barrage of AA fire (which we did not hear). Then we moved on, went  zwr zwk zss zar zad
