Thursday 16th

… we packed up the car with skis and sledges, and at 12.30 started off to the hills, via the house … of some friends of the family called B-R … we had lunch and went off. A simply lovely place, crowds of the people came, all staying with the B-Rs … zol zfr zwr zmh

Mart was pretty good on skis, Chris [his brother] tried a jump turn, landed on a tin, and cut his knee to the bone. Went to the First Aid Post and came back and skied. I tobogganed terribly fast … zfr zac zol zmt

I’m afraid that Martin is going to be confirmed, it seems a pity; he is otherwise so frightfully nice and pretty sensible. zfr zrl zop

Saturday 18th

… I told Cruickshank that I was an Atheist, Mart heard and apparently didn’t know before. He seemed to mind rather a lot. Later on when he was getting into bed after having a drink, I asked him if he hated me for it. He said No.   ? zrl zfr

 

Sunday 19th

… Headmaster preached a boring sermon telling us to give all our money to charity. Said he thought all hospitals should be supported by public donations. Does not seem to realise that this means that they are all stony broke and unable to buy decent apparatus. Poor fool. zrl zch zpn zhp

 

Friday 24th

… We had Mr. Aldiss for Geography. Talked about space. I had one of my brighter thoughts:

Space, as everyone admits, is limitless. But it stands to reason that everything (e.g. Space) must go on for ever (and ever). Therefore I come to the conclusion that there is absolutely no reason to suppose that it hasn’t been going on for ever (and ever). Therefore one of the needs for zpy zsa
