Ditto. Better weather. Harder work. OK. More tired. … zwr zhk

 

Thursday 10th

… Biking across the misty moor as usual before eight, but after a little rain it cleared to quite a decent day. … after tea, usual walk and sing. zcy zhk zwk zwr

 

Friday 11th

Another good warm day. Work since Wednesday has really been pleasant and untiring. Mr. Prowse our farmer is a very nice man, in every way. He has treated us very well, and we have been given tea often (we provided the tealeaves). … zwr zhk zop zfd

 

Saturday 12th

Our last working day, only half one. … Then goodbye (really regretfully with the prospect of back to prison soon), to Mr. Prowse and family. zhk zem

We were free from 12.30, so (Mr. Prowse having given the party 10/- ‘to buy a drink’) off to Trengwainton [home of the Bolitho family]. … at 7.45, off to Morfa (?) in Col. Bolitho’s car (he is the Lord Lieutenant) where was a kittiwakerie. Quite unjustified but pleasant use of petrol. Grand place, where besides masses of nesting kittiwakes we saw a fulmar petrel, razorbill, shags etc. … When we got back we asked the ‘Bird’ [teacher in charge] if we could go out to see the badgers, and to our amazement he said we could. … zmo zrn zwn zwl

 

Sunday 13th

The end of the happy interlude, happy despite 8½–¾ hours work each day and rain and little sanitation. … We got paid—the pooled wages came to 9/6 each—which is OK. … Rather tired we reached the dear old place. … zhk

Walked [to chapel] and back with Taylor, who very unfortunately is leaving after this term for the BBC. Life next year will not be jolly. … I am an expectant uncle, good show—January. … ztc zfl
