As for the question of CP–Labour Party affiliation … the CP is essentially different to Labour, the latter is purely an electoral body with general agreement (woolly idea’d too) on policy in the terrible (they [the Labour Party] regard it almost like that) eventuality of a Labour govt. coming to power. The CP, on the contrary, is a definite education—body of leaders with their prime interest the working class. zpn

 

Sunday 6th

[By bike from Newquay to a farmer at Newbridge (near Penzance) for whom we lifted potatoes. ]

… hectic off with Roger, M and S. They went a good speed, the latter two having 3 speeds, with pauses for smokes (not me). … then Roger’s axle bust off. After much searching, and seeing the bus with others in whizz past, we found a garage with an extremely helpful man who fitted a new cone—there had only been 5 ball bearings in the wheel. zcy zmh

On, sunny, cheerful, to Hoyle. Then when the others were right ahead, Roger’s tyre burst. … found a man and bought an inner tube and pump, put it in, blew the pump connection, and failed to find any Cornishman willing to sell us half a loaf. Rather depressed we rode out. Roger on a flat tyre … to Penzance, St Michael’s Mt. looking lovely, and up out of the town. … zcy

 

Monday 7th

… We arrived at eight, up the field, and dug and lifted potatoes behind a horse and plough with an energetic farmer. Hard work. 10 min break at 10 with lovely creamy milk. … Occasional rain … Hard long day. But good supper. zcy zhk zfd zwr

 

Tuesday 8th

A similar day. Just about as wet. As hard work, welcome change in the morning weighing sacks for a GWR [Great Western Railway] lorry … Then off with Roger, M and S to the woods, returning in song. Life here zmh zhk zwr zwk
