page 203 — October 1942

I read two books today—’The Road to Wigan Pier’ and ‘The Lion and the Unicorn’—both George Orwell. He’s very prejudiced against Russia and English Communists, the latter partly excusable, but he does not see the good and potential good in Russia. Socialist however, and thinks we’ll not win the war until we are (Lion … written in 1940). zbp zru zpn

Monday 12th

… Excitement at 12.40—verey lights by Baker’s Folly. … Rush out when the bell went, to see  rubber dinghy and 5 men there. A Whitley [bomber] had apparently landed [in the sea] at 12.23, and sunk later. At 1.15 approx. the Newquay lifeboat arrived—quick work! Pretty disgraceful. … zac zam

Soc. Soc.—[lecture by] a Norwegian who had recently arrived [by boat] at the Shetlands—and had had difficulty in contacting the police! Interesting, and I should say a nice man. zcb zwe zrg
