… I read ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’ [by George Orwell]. zbp

We were supposed if pos to make toys—I don’t know what to make, and I don’t fit in with the atmosphere of the house storeroom (carpentry place). Max would say ‘aloof’—I don’t know—I think it’s a form of shyness really, and also I know I’m not liked much by most people. … zcf zem zfr zsy

2 letters … Nora is settling down well, is in charge of junior nurses who like her. I do hope she does her job successfully—it would make such a difference to her if she found that she was capable. zfl zmw zhk

It strikes me that when I read this in years to come I’ll want to know what I think now of my physical appearance—I’m 6 ft., not very broad now, 10 stone, my nose is wide, snub and original, I have a very large mouth of which I’m sometimes shy, with thick almost negroid lips. I want to get into the habit of writing down my dreams—testing the theory of dreaming in the past and future. I’m now sceptical. One dream was that I went and sat down at the 3rd table and Max told me I would listen to the wireless at ? o’clock. I knew that this was when Mommy would broadcast from S. Africa (personal message) as she’d told me in the letter before. She had been sunk off that coast. I saw a photo in the paper of airmen in the sea in the paper who were also going to talk, as it said underneath. zsy

The second dream was in the chemi. lab. I created an elephant, about 1ft high. In the lab were about six boys and two girls, one looking like B (who was also there). Outside the window was another form, which came in when it rained. Mr. Dodd was taking us. zsy

Theories as to origin—(1) Mommy’s letter, photos in paper—why sunk? zsy

(2) Doing chemistry, ‘Co-education’ (a book I’m reading—very convincing)—why the elephant—the school pigs also came in the dream in connection with Mr. Dodd. … zsy
