only let me go 3 times a term. He said my attitude was typical of the socialist haves to the havenots—I got livid … and asked just what he thought he meant, and told him he was talking utter rot. He got a bit annoyed and soon left. zag ztc zsd zpn
Thursday 28th
… We got up in uniforms and fell in at the Pentire at 15.15 hours … No. 5 [platoon] marched to Crantocks, and then about 2½ miles towards the pylons. Here we split up, and with M and his section we rushed off across fields. We soon split up and I lost sight of all the rest of the section except M and R. We met no opposition for some time, and in response to my urgings we advanced quickly to Penpol, where we saw the first steel helmeted parachutists. These, however, disappeared, so we crossed over the marshy bit to the field beyond Penpol by the bridge. zct zlb
Advancing along here, I fired two shots at a sten gunner, who I believe was made a casualty, and then I suddenly found my self behind an enemy post of 3 men—S, R and T. I bayoneted S, but they were already dead so I ignored them. After that I wandered around nearly freelance, killing R and T again, and being killed by them. The battle faded out, but not before I had had sufficient exercise for weeks to come! zct zlb zwp
Sunday 31st
… we left for Kelsey Head [on an illegal outing]. Another party was going, so we joined on … We arrived, and swam across 12 feet of flowing channel, many feet deep. The Chick [rocks in the sea] (where we’d swum to) was riddled with nests, and smelt strongly of guano. We found two dead shags and saw about 15 live ones. We then rushed back, the current having considerably increased in speed. M and L couldn’t swim, and came across on a clothes line. Fun. We biked back … arriving at 5.10, rather tired… zmb zol zwl zdg
