I saw 2 legs and a dog ahead. We withdrew strategically. … we began to bike back, but stopped to see how wavy it was at the top of various pine trees. It was, very, and we descended with haste. We then returned, and I biked on home—he seems quite nice really, despite Eton. zfr zcy zol
Wednesday 8th
Mommy asked David Wolfe up for the morning to help collect wood … we got two full trailer loads. After that we went down to the lake and sunk eggshells and paper boats with my air pistol … zfl zfr zdc zwp zol
His mother stayed to lunch, and afterwards we had quite an interesting discussion on various topics. After doing a little more boat sinking (destructive tendencies!) we returned, and Raymond and George came to the Norton Scout meeting—the others did not. We had a jolly good meeting learning various knots … David knew a lot of them and helped teach. … zfl zfr zhy zwp zol zct zcb zev
Friday 10th
… Mrs. Wolfe … wants David to stay with us—while not with other relations—as she’s joining up. She’ll pay etc., but Mommy doesn’t relish the idea of more school clothes. Anyhow, fate hangs in the balance, Daddy is going to be the final weight. The disruptive influence on home life, and the extra work for Mommy, are points against. Besides, we hardly know what he’s like. He went off to stay with his father at Whitton (Yorks.) today, for about a week. zfr zfl
Saturday 11th
Indians have rejected proposals, total washout. ‘Cripps orders his plane’ (News Chronicle). General history is this—proposals in main accepted, but no agreement reached concerning (a) defence minister and (b) self gov. now. Muslims and Hindus both objected. I can see no defence for our attitude in (a)—Cripps [a government minister] lamely says it would mean a terrible lot of re-organisation, but in (b) I think we are partially justified. However, British diplomacy being what it is, I can quite see the Indians’ point—if not now, ever? So what. Japs are at the gate, Ind. Imp. remains on the pennies and everything in the garden’s awful. zpl zpn zwg
