Saturday 4th

After elevenses Daddy, Mommy and me went out with lunch. We lit a very successful fire in the quarry (flint) on the far side of Sodgers bottom, where we ate our sandwiches and drank our tea. Then we were peaceful for a bit, and having thoroughly extinguished the fire, walked back by the green slope—a nice afternoon. zfl zcg zfd zwk

Everyone strangely tired and mournful after supper, but we cheered up a bit before going to bed. Just as we were getting into bed Margaret rang up from Pulborough, having travelled from Yorkshire by lorry etc. to London and thence to Pulborough by a non-existent [probably freight] train. She’s been at a Youth Hostel having political discussions—lucky devil! zmh zfl zem zpm

Mommy rushed off to fetch her, and Daddy and me prepared supper and relit the copper fire [for boiling water] to give her a bath (we’re economising in coal and doing without the boiler). … zfl zdc zrn zdq

… Daddy and I went for a walk—deserted orchard, beech swing branches, home through the woods … We brought back a bunch of wood anemones, white and purple violets, and some sprays of pussywillow. … zfl zwk zwl

George Ward’s parents were there when we arrived. George returned from his church service (poor boy) during tea—they didn’t seem very interested. zfr zev zop

We got back from the station at 7 mins to 1, so I leapt on my bike and raced to the village, arriving for lunch at the Wolfes’ at 1 minute to. … zfr zcy zhy

After a goodish lunch, we sat and talked for a bit and then David and I went for a windy bicycle ride—I was on Nora’s “bike”. … We investigated a deserted group of cast iron huts and a boathouse, and we were following a duckboard (pre-war) path through some marshes when zfr zcy zol zhy
