Wednesday 28th

…In corps we did Ceremonial—marching past and eyes right etc. There were uniforms available, but Sergt. Gale didn’t have time to fit me. I hope I do get one. zct zmc

After tea I rolled the tennis court and had a haircut. I prepared my bike for tomorrow, Field day—when we (No. 5 platoon) are going to be on bicycles—wizard. … zsu zcy zct

Thursday 29th

Field day. …I changed into my own uniform in the rest (I’d got one in break) … Then we took our bikes up, and biked to the headland—I had a rifle, but only Hawkins had blanks—20 .303 rounds (mine was .22). We did one glorious charge, losing half our men, from the first seat [public bench] on Pentire headland, down by the chemistry lab right past the Pentire Bay path. It rained a little. I was killed on the charge to Fistral Bay (knocked off my bike by Wood) but went on and was blown up by a hand grenade soon after. It was raining, so I had to collect all uniforms for the drying room. zmc zct zcy zwp zlb zwr
