to Newquay

Tuesday 10th

Daddy rang up in the morning to say that the shops below the flats had been blown in, but that he was alright. I went to the station, got there at 10 o’clock and my train didn’t leave until 11.45. Awful train, very crowded, full of evacuating slums. One mother told her child ‘Behive yer bloody self’. I luckily had a seat about 2/3 of the way. The Woods didn’t get on. Arrived at Newquay at 6.50, where I sent a small boy whom I had been looking after all the way to his billet by taxi. Mr. Candler on the platform. zar ztv zev

Went for a walk on the beach and to bed at ninish. zwk

Wednesday 11th

[I went on a trip by car before term started with Mr. Candler (physics teacher), Martin Wood, his brother Christopher and others.] ztc zss zfr

…We had our first stop when we saw a stone circle, and soon after we left the car at a farm and began to walk towards a Quoit [Cornish megalithic tomb] … After that we left the car somewhere and walked about 2 miles to the Leland Youth Hostel. We slept in little tin huts with 3 double decker beds.  zss zmh

Thursday 12th

We went for a walk up the same hill as I had gone up with Christopher yesterday, and we could see both seas and the 3 rocks past Newquay, about 35-40 miles. … zwk zss
