Friday 9th

We have now shot 60 not 53 down. 27 dive bombers. We lost 16, and three of our pilots are safe. zam

… went out to tea with Dr. Hopkinson. We went to the Bird Sanctuary before tea—it is quite dry, and about 5ft of nettles nearly everywhere. zwl

Gladiators in Libya shot down 15 Italians, although outnumbered by 2‑1, and only lost 2! zam

Sunday 11th

… Another big airbattle, 60 down for 24. The FANYs left us for Dr. Hopkinson. [Women of the Field Army Nursing Yeomanry had been billeted at our house.] zam zmw

 

Tuesday 13th

In the morning B rang up and as I could not think of an excuse in time, I went round. We had quite fun, all his points [in his railway set] are electrically operated, so we could do quite exciting things. zfr zmd

In the afternoon I read and let in the patients. Prof. and Mrs. and Mr. Cornford came to tea. After tea we began packing stores. Bassadone is again having his meals at the department, as he is a guinea-pig [this was work on a highly nutritious national loaf]. zmw zhy zrg zfd

Wednesday 14th

‘Hitler in London tomorrow!’ (written in June). My foot!!! He said he would be but yesterday we got 78 planes, lost 13 but 10 men are safe! zwg
