Thursday 4th

The French fleet has largely come over to our side. 1/3 has been sunk because they opposed us.  znb

Treweeks has not got sunstroke but he hadn’t got diphtheria or scarlet fever either, but, worst of all, Infantile Paralysis! So we’re in quarantine with all sorts of restrictions.[Infantile paralysis was the name then used for polio – which was often fatal.] zil

 

Friday 5th

We were isolated all day … and had to do lessons by ourselves. … zil zsr

Lunch early so we don’t mix with Woodlands [house}. … Treweeks is rather worse. Both his lungs are slightly paralysed, and he is in an iron lung. No one else has it. … zil zsr zmq

A Beaufort flew past very low. … zpp

Saturday 6th

… There were three air raid alarms in the morning, and I heard three ‘huns’ and AA [anti-aircraft] fire. Quite exciting.  zar zad

In the afternoon Wood iii, A, F and self went along to Pentire Head. We climbed down and got some photos of the young gulls, which were lovely and fluffy and speckly. … zwk zph zwl
