Saturday 25th

Bathing will begin this weekend!!! Headmaster announced this in Prayers. … We played the Upper School again … I made 27 caught slips—my average is now 205/7. I also caught the last man on the fourth ball of the last over. … zsp

I practically finished my S. Spitfire. … zmd

 

Sunday 26th

At first it was a very nice sunny day. In chapel we spent about 20 mins praying, very tiring and boring. When I got back I wrote home. That afternoon I had been going to play tennis, but a torrential downpour made the ground too soft. zrl zwr

I finished my Spitfire (i.e. put aerial and wireless mast on) and then almost immediately bust it. I had a collision with F’s unfinished Messerschmitt and mine dropped on the floor and the wing bust off. I had no glue left. I blamed F though it was actually just as much my fault. I was extremely annoyed. zmd zac

Tuesday 28th

Perfectly foul news. King Leopold of Belgium, as commander of the Belgian army, has capitulated against the wishes of the government and without consulting us and has left us with the possibility of being surrounded. SWINE! Actually half the army is still fighting, and the other half have capitulated. Things in the future look very gloomy. I didn’t learn the news until the evening, rather depressed … a little cheerfuller later as we are sure to win in the end. zlb zem zwg

 

Wednesday 29th

For about 20 minutes in geography, Mr. Oakley told us about the war; pretty sticky in Belgium. After tea (for which we had wizard ice-creams!) we had nets [cricket practice], during which a large flight of ancient biplanes flew overhead—I don’t know what. … ztc zwg zfd zsp zpp
