Tuesday 9th

I rang up Boston and he came round and stayed for lunch. We sent the steam train once—she went very well, and then we played with Tinker and sat in the greenhouse. zfr zhy zmd zpt

Horrible news! Germany has practically invaded Denmark and is invading Norway by sea. All her marines were on iron ore steamers disguised and in this way they captured Narvik. Oslo surrendered in the evening after being bombed. Naval engagements off the coast—but we can’t know anything definite. … zlb znb zar

 

Wednesday 10th

I didn’t go to Boston or ask him round as it is the last day here.

News is that a great deal of naval activity. Germans have lost 3 or + cruisers, 2 or + destroyers, 3 submarines, 10 or more supply ships and 5 transports. We have lost 2 destroyers, and [plus] one badly damaged. Norwegians holding out on land. … znb zlb

Packed after tea, also bought two films which Mommy had given me. News very good.  zph

Thursday 11th

Filthy journey. Train started at  9 and we got to Petworth at about 2.15. ztv

News of the sinking of two more of our destroyers. We have now lost HMS Hardy, HMS Hunter, HMS Glowworm and HMS Geurka [Gurkha]. znb

Glatting very well. Andy and Flopsy [rabbits] looking better than for a long time. zpt

 

Friday 12th

I cooked breakfast in my house—porridge and bacon. Spent most of the morning there, and made the coffee for my lunch. During the morning I spilt paraffin on my sweater, and had a row with Margaret, not a very long one. zdc zfd zfl
