Filthy icy gale. I had shivers, goose skin and a headache all day, in the evening a spot on my head, so I’m wondering … if I’ve chicken pox. … zwr zil
Saturday 5th
I had indeed—woke up with a spotty chest. Fortunately last night my premonition made me prepare the books I’ll need—if I can get ’em past the fumigation barrier. The latter also vetoes letters—but Max typed a note out to home, and I’ll have to try and disinfect and smuggle out one to Elisabeth—or if necessary get Max to type a short note. zil zmt zsw
Max brought me up to the San. … Dozed in the afternoon; the original culprit H [first chicken pox victim] brought me up an orange—he’s been here three weeks—if I’m that long I’ll scream! WAS tonight too, socialism debate on Saturday, work pressing … and no letters out officially. Hell. zil zmt zcb
Bored evening dipping into books and dozing—food good. Life by year [ear] and through a window gives a sense of detachment—I could see my bedclothes airing from my window, and the bus seems to pass very frequently. zil zmt zfd zds zem zmh

With the aid of dope I had a lovely night, and slept on after breakfast to about 12 o’clock, when Max arrived with two letters—Elisabeth and Tom Elkins.
