… I carried two v. heavy packages (suitcase and box of books) home to Kybald St. Mommy and Daddy both in, Daddy engaged with a Mad Irish doctor with coloured geometrical interpretations of life. Mommy with flu. Home. zfl zmw zil
Saturday 18th
Went with Mommy in the new car—a 1937 Morris 8, taking Daddy to the Dept, and we arrived back to find Martin and two fellow boffins, who had called in to thaw on the way to Farnborough. Martin fairly cheery. Wood [who lived near Oxford] arrived at 11.15 (per arrangement), and we went and—after searching—found a Mr. Williams at the dept of Pathology who is to take us for two hourly periods weekly on Chemistry (for 12/6 a time!). … zmo zfl zca zsa

… I spent the whole day very lazily, largely reading Eve Curie’s ‘Journey among warriors’, which I think is very good [a journalist’s report from the main war fronts in late 1941 and early 1942]. … zbf zwg

Can’t remember a bloody thing of the early part of the day. In the evening we (Daddy, Margaret and I) went to a party given by the Univ. firewatchers—about 40 there, quite fun—silly games, and unfortunately dancing. Then carols. Daddy left early. Margaret and I to our surprise zfl zcl
