to Oxford
Thursday 16th
… Journey to London was comfortable; I spent that and (after we’d had ‘coffee’ at Paddington) most of the journey to Oxford reading ‘The Jungle’ [by Upton Sinclair]—a morbid but very fine book. Daddy took the journey fairly well. Arrived at Kybald Street house—no furniture yet, carpets and blackout just ready. ztv zbn zfl
We had tea at the Turins’—they are awfully kind and have made Mother’s stay possible—they’re Russian—not anti-present system [the Turins were attached in some way to University College]. … zhy zfr zru
Friday 17th
… No furniture. Daddy went to the Institute at 9.45, Mommy and me went and shopped, had coffee, and then called at the Hobsons’ and brought away a camp bed. … zfl zsh zfr
After lunch I went to the food office. … I slept in the flat on the floor, Daddy on the Hobsons’ camp bed … News and coffee at the Turins’. zrn zfl zhy
Saturday 18th
… ex-Polish pilot Stefan Gawel called and chatted. Mommy and I went to a flick. … zhy zfr zfl zfm
A funny picnic living in an unfurnished flat—with 2½ knives, 2 forks, a teapot and little else! However we were given three chairs by the Turins—whose generosity is embarrassing. zcg zfd zfr
Sunday 19th
… I asked Stefan to tea instead of vice-versa and then we went for a walk—Christ Church Meadows and Addison’s walk. Back, and Stefan and the Turins (with cups) came in for tea—very nice party. After supper we went round to the Turins—good interesting company—West African girl and an English woman doctor who’d practised there. zfr zhy zmw
Monday 20th
… I went to see Daddy off to London for a committee on ‘Higher Education in the Colonies’! The luggage is in Oxford, but will not zfl
