Sunday 25th

and along the headland with Wood and Wallop, looking for W and H who were trying out a tent by a quarry. We made a double round tour of the quarries but missed them. A fine starry warmish night—very lovely. Back up the porch, welcome sleep. … zwk zcg

 

Monday 26th

… I went to say goodbye to Taylor in the afternoon—we talked for a bit and he told me to look him up if ever I passed through London. I am very sorry to see the last of him. ztc zem

There was startling news this morning; Mussolini has resigned [in fact deposed]. Badoglio has succeeded, with blaa about the king, more fighting and martial law. Fascist militia incorporated in army. Signs of cracking I wonder? … zwg zlb

Tuesday 27th

… caught 4.18 from Victoria after a short time spent in the flick. … Margaret home, Nora for two days … and Daddy’s secretary Gwynneth (how spelt?). … zfl zfm

 

Wednesday 28th

… After tea Margaret and I went and bathed with David Wolfe, returning to find Roger installed here, after a goodish hop including a lorry loaded (by him) with 9 tons of Brylcreem which later had a blow out. Off tomorrow walking. zfl zol zfr zmo

 

Thursday 29th

… we went off—Margaret, Roger and I, loaded with heavyish haversacks. We stopped for lunch past Bishop’s Ring, then after a little doze, on through hot sun, skirting part of the artillery range; and so at last down into Cocking. Beyond we found a fine camping site, and settled down to hot food and drink and early bed. No sleep came, so up and bed again towards dark. Fine searchlight. zwk zfl zfr zss zcg zad zfd
