Thursday 24th

Speech day. … I was demonstrating the short-sighted and long-sighted eye, and the curing by spectacles—a simple and very effective demonstration—much enjoyed by all I think. I enjoyed doing the talking too, especially to the bevies of fair damsels who came from the Bristol [Benenden]. I also contributed a dissected frog, which was not appreciated on the whole, though nobody was actually sick. zsa zem zcl

After lunch there was a very good Art exhibition too (a lovely Gannel by Kitson), the guard of honour, and silly speeches. … zcl zat

Down to the theatre, dress, make up, and starting at 8.15. All OK, if very hot. Two ITW [RAF Initial Training Wing] blokes came to firewatch, and we sent them in to see the play after the first interval—they liked it a lot; as we left they were helping the stage hands. zth zan

The audience clapped more, Macbeth and Lady M had two curtain calls, Mr. Taylor [director] was made to appear, and it was one of the best plays ever; and we enjoyed it as well a lot and were very sorry indeed that he is leaving us. … zth zem ztc

 

Sunday 27th

… we had a lovely afternoon sunning and swimming. Back, stopping on Crantock beach for more sun. Many fair damsels around, and I do not approve of segregation. I wonder if something might not arise out of the play—anyhow I hope some female contact occurs—especially for next year when I’ll be pretty friendless here. zol zse zfr

I slept through part of an incredibly poor and boring service. Dejected this evening. … zem

 

Monday 28th

Very hot and lovely. I did work fairly hard. Bathe in Gannel. … zwr zol

News—S. Greece railway to Europe thoroughly cut by guerrillas—good for them. zlb

 

Wednesday 30th

Cloudy. Life was very normal, we did heliograph and M/L lamps in corps. There is a horrible plan for an all Sunday do. zsg zwr
