… being free after tea I went out and read ‘Poems of this War’ by Baker’s Folly wall. Some I liked. Feel uncomfortable and unsettled today. … zwk zpo zem

News—Announced from Moscow that the 3rd International has disbanded itself on the proposal of the executive, due to the impossibility of meeting in war time. [It] calls on its followers to exert ‘utmost effort’ towards end of fascist tyranny. This may be regarded by some as an admission of failure, or as the removal of domination of the world CP by one country—supposed to be using it for its own ends. I don’t know quite how to look at it, being ill-informed. zru zpn

… biked down town … and shopped—chocolate, pencils and brake cable for Wood. Then my job—standing by a model Spitfire, the propeller of which could be turned, and in front of a 1d in the slot machine for the War Effort [part of ‘Wings for Victory Week’]. I had at first a small boy to turn the prop, but I let him go with a piece of chocolate as his hands were blistering. About 12 orphans passed and all had a turn on the wheel. Quite amusing. zcy zsh zmd zch

… Then back seeing a query query young skua—strange bird … very aft legs, used wings in diving. If it is a young skua it really has no business to be here, but strong winds may have blown it. zwl

… Got permission to take lunch out tomorrow. Myra Hess [famous pianist] is playing in the town, but seats are 5/- reserved or 3/6 and I haven’t really the cash—if it’s raining I’ll try to get in. zmu zcg

Sunday 23rd

A holiday. Roger and I, as arranged, took lunch out … with food and water and ‘costumes de baigner’ (wrong) artfully concealed. … Down to the valley beyond Porth—onto the beach, where we bathed briefly … Then up along the road to near Mawgan, where we cut down to the cliffs through hay and cornfields, all this in half sun—warm. zol zwk
