Monday 3rd

… I fetched a JTC wireless set  from Pentire, for my practice and familiarisation [I was now in the signalling section and involved in maintaining a radio link with the Pentire hotel]. Then mowing, and then a Biology extra, 6-8, cockroaches, including the setting of the mouthparts thereof. … zct zsg zsu zsa zsw

 

Tuesday 4th

… established radio contact with PENtire (link sign Peter Easy Nan). … I get on pretty well with my study mates, I think—quite OK.  zsg zfr

After tea a short rehearsal [Macbeth]. I learnt after Prep my parts for I ii and I iv—about 20 lines in all. zth

 

Wednesday 5th

… JTC—10 mins W/T [wireless telegraphy], then lectures to beginners and Cadre pl. [platoon] on procedure and organisation; I think I will be a permanent signaller—far more fun than drill. zct zsg

Afternoon periods—very interesting electronic structure in Chemistry, too complex Physics. … zsa zsw

After tea helped Butter lay telephone line, fluted and listened to gramophone. zsg zmu

Soviet forces near Novorissisk, French, American, 1st Army near Tunis and Bizerta. zru zwg

 

Thursday 6th

… A mine was sighted … which was eventually detonated by a coastguard at 9.25 off Splash Point, to the detriment of seven Pentire and two Bay windows—the former blew in, the latter out, no casualties. … zwp zac

 

Saturday 8th

First class gale blowing, grey, wind and surf a mile out. Struggle walking, and very heavy showers. … zwr

Rehearsal after prayers which went pretty well, and I like my part [Malcolm]. The lone scene with Macduff has been suitably shortened.  zth
