Up at 4.45, pack, breakfast, feeling happy, and then a long wait in the hall. At 5.40 we rang the bus station to find that no bus had materialised, and as the train was six-five, most started to walk … only 39 there [in time]. Hence a very comfortable journey. ztv

I went Underground to Victoria, bought my ticket, sweet ration and a paper, eat half the sweet ration, had a panic about having lost the ticket but found it with the chocolate (–ate half the ticket‑-), read the paper and boarded the 4.18. zrn zfd znw
… Poor old Tinker has been done in, as his ears got worse and worse, but, joy of joys and dream of dreams, John arrived this morning!! He spent six weeks on the way, and his delayed cable and letters never arrived. He was there, very brown and different to what I remember, probably because I’ve changed a lot. … zpt zfl zop
Daddy can manage mental work quite well, but has not improved much physically, but he is happy and on the whole OK. God it’s grand to be home! zfl zil

Nora left today for a course in nursing in Tooting—she has improved tremendously from her last job. … zfl zop
After chatting by the fire, John and I left Daddy and went out for a brisk walk in the rain—the weather John dreamt of in Egypt. We talked a lot and I now know him better than ever before—because I’m no longer a much younger brother with quite different interests. zfl zwk zwr zop
