Saturday 2^nd

Martin was expected all afternoon … he rang up from Pulborough at 7.0, and was fetched. Very tired and nonreceptive. I always used to feel awed by him, and imagined that he was contemptuous of me—probably quite unwarranted, but I’ve never really been at ease with him—or John. zfl zop

Sunday 3^rd

… I went for a longish walk with Margaret and Martin (who wore a lovely furry [lined] leather flying jacket—the walk was not hilarious, for Martin is still pretty exhausted, and has rather a headache I believe. … zfl zop

Good news—while the capture of Veliki Luki was being described, news of the capture of Mozdok came in. Three big towns on three fronts in about one week. It’s wonderful. zru zlb

Wednesday 6^th

… Daddy examined Martin and discovered that he had a dilated heart. Usually this means rheumatic fever, but Martin has never had that. He suddenly felt ill about two weeks ago—presumably it’s due to constant strain and working at high pressure. What makes it worse is that he’s zfl zil zmw
