Today is the anniversary of the October [Russian] Revolution. Twenty-five years, I think. There are many true criticisms to be made, but the system has proved to be the most economically sound, it has done more to promote health and happiness than any other. … Anyhow, I think the communist ideal is the hope for the future. zru zpn

News. American forces, to be followed by British, have landed in French Morocco and Algiers from the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Gen. Giraud, who recently escaped from Germany, has called on his troops from Algeria to assist us. zwf zlb
There is a hope, and a possibility, that the German and Italian armies in North Africa, outnumbered and surrounded, will be liquidated. Then, or before then, France will be invaded also. The outlook is brighter than for some time. zwf zlb zwg
… we had a rehearsal—or rather a say through [of ‘The Blue Comet’]. I quite know my part, so I can now concentrate on the acting and expression more. I think this play will be fun, even though it means missing three days at home—and I think this is now definite. … zth

… Letter from Margaret: … USSR meeting—Red Dean spoke, very good. She ends up “Do you know exactly what’s wrong with Daddy—I can’t make out except that it’s due to overwork. Anyhow, as he gave me no cause to worry, I’m not worrying”. I, however, having heard nothing else about it, am. Not frightfully, but Daddy’s father died of cancer.… zfl zru zil
