…An ailing rabbit gave Henry a chance to dissect one, so we dislocated its neck and cut it open. The intestines—to our delight—contracted still, and if pinched went tight:     Then when he opened the thorax, we found the heart, distended, still beating. Soon only the right auricle was working and eventually this too stopped. Death was due to many small flat white nematodes. … zsa zpt zil

Mr. and Mrs. Hill and their daughter … came to tea … [the latter] has a messy foot from 3-month old graft for X-ray burn, which Daddy and Henry examined. … zhy zil zmw

…biked to Francis’ with Henry for the news. Streets in Stalingrad recaptured, bloody fighting and still no second front. We are a damned awful country, and the Russians are beginning to say so. We woffle about our allies, the Americans; we boast what we are going to do, but we do nothing to help the 3,000+ casualties per day which Russia is suffering. zfr zrg zru zlb zwc zwg

to Newquay

Tuesday 22nd

Up, breakfast, goodbye Glatting and everyone in it, and off to Pulborough. Uneventful, melancholy journey to London, where we bussed to Paddington, had coffee in an ABC [cafeteria], and went on the platform. Same faces, same goodbyes, same coma in the train. Mommy and Nora walked away just before the train left. ztv zem zfl

AWW there, he went after Benenden after a time. I declined. Spent the day (mostly in the corridor) looking out of the windows. Talked to Treweeks, who had infantile paralysis—headache—oblivion, no fear. zfr zse zil

Arrived late, in the dark, supper, miserable; and wrote a miserable letter, bed, asleep. Am sharing in a big room with AWW only, RJC has a single and anyway won’t return for a few days as he has impetigo. zem zfr zil
