Tuesday 5th

… In the afternoon I made a very valuable contribution to Britain’s war effort. At 2.15 I left the house dressed in white flannels (How to Save Soap) but without boots (I had gym shoes), pads or bat of my own. At 2.30 (approx.) I walked out to a grassy field covered in 14 other similarly garbed blokes, and for 65 minutes I stood about, stopping some, missing many balls. … I then lay in the sun for 1½ hours … on one occasion I protected my legs, took a complicated structure of wood and rubber, and stood before three stakes in the ground while someone hurled a hand ball at me. I hit the ball once, and ran aimlessly to another trio of stumps, I then missed 2, the ball hit the stumps and I walked back to the sun. zsp zsr

I got back, just changed in time to learn … that I had a net at 6.5. I was extremely angry… A half holiday! Not more than 10mins of free time, and the war effort in no way better off. Total war! zsp zsr
