Daddy and I went for a bird walk along Rhinehurst Bottom. We saw or heard whitethroat, blackcap, chiff chaff, willow wren. Also a possible nuthatch. … zfl zwl zwk

News. 12 Lancasters made daylight raid on submarine engine factory in S. Germany. 4 lost S. of Paris, 3 after dropping the bombs. On the evening of the sweep (about 5, I think) I saw six 4‑engined bombers fly off low down, like Halifaxes but quite possibly Lancasters. The time tallies I think. They flew at 30 ft. the whole way, what a journey! zar zpp

Wednesday 22nd

… Mommy went off and collected the week’s shopping from Mrs. Hare’s, and some photographs of Russian life, for the talk and exhibition in the Institute hut on Friday (Mrs. Reckitt is going to talk) [my mother had organised a speaker on Russia to give a talk at the Women’s Institute in Sutton]. zsh zru zcb zlu

Margaret and I biked to the village and did the paper sorting—which wasn’t too bad—¾ of an hour. Nice surprise for Mommy. zhk zfl
