page 16 — January 1940

Arrived back at 3.30 to find there is skating. I shall get my skates which were promised at Christmas tomorrow. WHOOPEE! [It was an exceptionally cold winter, and the flooded fens around Cambridge offered extensive areas for skating]  zsp


Wednesday 3rd

… We got my skates and had them fixed [to] the boots. … We went to Grantchester meadows, which were rather rough, but all the same quite fun, and then we went out to lunch with the Bushells … zsp zhy

José Cisneros came to supper; apparently he is working on a farm until he returns to Spain. [José was one of the Basque refugee children housed at a hostel my mother had helped set up.]  zhy zrg
