… Uneventful journey … An army lorry had bust down half one side of Stopham bridge, and was lying on its back in the water—minus driver. zmo zac

Wednesday 1st

… In the afternoon I walked down to the village with Mommy, who had a Womens Institute meeting … The ‘Norton scouts’ arrived, and we went on the downs to have tea. The fire did not light as everything was wet, and generally it was not a great success. zfl zsh zct zwk zcb zcg

They played a game in which everyone ‘got’ everyone else (shot him as soon as they saw him, whatever position they were in, and whatever the distance, and always before he got them). Not much good either. The goats were an added complication, as the boys liked teasing them, and they liked eating yew [poisonous to goats] … zfr zgn zct zcb zpt
