said that the old school tie was a damn good thing, that the other people were jealous; there! UGH !!! I felt quite sick. The headmaster made a pathetic speech too. … zcl zsw zop ztc

to Glatting

Tuesday 29th

The leaving prefects raided all the juniors at 4.28 with glasses of water, 2 mins before the bell went, when we had intended to do it to them. We retaliated—I scored a direct hit on B. zmb zfg

Off by bus early … I had a good  breakfast on the train … The train arrived on time, I caught the underground, and arrived just before the train left for Pulborough. In the compartment were two brothers with a young tame jay, two downy white sparrow hawks and a young ? owl. They fed the jay on rabbit, and were just going to feed the hawks on a young pigeon which they killed on the spot when the carriage was invaded by elderly gentleman and wife. Birds were all hurriedly bundled away, but jay contrived to knock on the box. The man opposite me was asleep, and dribbled down his waistcoat periodically. I changed successfully at Three Bridges. zmh ztv zfd zop zgk zwl zpt

When I got to Pulborough I rang up—no answer. I began to walk and rang up from the box near Stopham bridge—no answer, so I rang the Armstrongs and asked them to find [my mother]. I went on walking, but no car appeared. I arrived at Francis’ house after nearly two hours, to learn that she was at a concert, so I went and stayed at the Armstrongs till she came back—I met her in the village—she was surprised! She had the young evacuee with her, Eric, or Little by Little, zfl zem zwk zev
