clothes, and got there in under an hour. We weren’t allowed in (although the sentry was very decent), so we got boring bits of Blenheim to show we’d been. From Porth, RJC, S and I raced, as we thought G might come and wake Wood for H[oly] Communion. We got back about 5 mins before them, all getting in successfully, and got into bed. Good fun, and we never expected that we’d not be caught. … zwk zmb zmf zpp
Monday 16th
A grey morning, clearing at about 11 o’clock to a lovely sunny day. During the afternoon some very dense patches of mist formed and drifted inland—the foghorn blared all the time. … zwr zds

After lunch I went to a demonstration of the new enlarger, passed a test so I can use it, and visited the oyster-catchers which T tried to photograph from under a rug. They came very near but behind rocks etc. Then I bathed again. zph zwl zol
Tuesday 24th
Field Day. We fell in at 9.10 and marched for an hour to Kelsey head (Cubert Common). Very hot. Then we split up into sections. Our section was on the extreme flank, and I was on its flank. Before lunch nothing happened except I lost my lunch and water and gas mask container, to find it in the stream 20 mins later with the water gone, and the food and box dissolving. Very hot. zct zma
About 2.40, B and R came past having killed off a section and being dead themselves, and they gave Smith ii and me their rifle and 6 blanks. zct zwp zma
