The game (1st 1st one) wasn’t at all bad for the 1st 1st one. Pretty stiff all day. Back for bath, music, and to read my prize book which has come, with 5/- extra required—called ‘Leninism’ by Stalin. Good. … zsp zbp

 

Monday 27th

… Long good letter from Roger [now studying Medicine at Glasgow]—with description of a slaughter house visit very reminiscent of ‘The Jungle’—the floor drains to the bowl for black pudding. zfr zmw zgk

 

Thursday 30th

… At 4.45 I mounted my bike, and off with flute and music, for my period with Miss Stewart at The Hotel Bristol, home of Benenden. Miss Stewart met me at the door and escorted me to room 167 … funny woman, but I think rather nice. She rushed off at 5.45, leaving me with two other flute playing damsels, one of whom showed me to the door. … zcy zmu ztc

Tuesday 5th

… Went by request to see Hales after tea—he’d received a letter from flautist Miss Stewart saying (a) that I had ability (even talent!) (b) I would be held up by fingering (c) [she] would let me have Bohm fingering flute for £12, and would allow me £5 on mine. … zmu

Normal day—I have no free time for boredom or misery nowadays, and am almost (whisper it not in Gath) enjoying school life—anyhow the out of school side. … zsa zem zsy
