A letter for Anthony Ryall today asking me to be chairman of one of the commissions at the [next Inter-Schools] conference—having been unanimously chosen by the ISC as one worthy of the office, which is gratifying and which I speedily proceeded to accept. … zic

Tuesday 14th

News—German Kiev counter-attack pass over to the defensive. USSR send military mission to Tito’s forces in YugoSlavia, good. King Peter [of Yugoslavia] (in Cairo) is anti—so unity is lacking—but I’m very glad they’ve done it. zru zlb zwg

During the day I slept whenever possible, which was not often [tired from performance the evening before, and late night]. PSN read from ‘An Unknown Disciple’ in Divinity, which struck me as very good. … zth zrl

 

Thursday 16th

[End of term] … A reply from David Gellman (ISC) thanking me for accepting chairmanship, and a copy of Phoenix including (quite a good—I think) article called ‘Training for Democracy’ by Anthony Ryle. The paper makes me feel happy—a breath of the conference spirit of hope and energy towards a purpose. zic zwt znw zsd zsr

There was a letter from Margaret saying—she’s got in touch with a friend in the Pressed Steel factory at Oxford who might be able to introduce some young enthusiastic working class comrades. Margaret says, and I know the feeling exactly, “I have contacted a group of people—and you have a nice warm sort of feeling, that you belong, they accept you, knowing that you’re working in the same direction”. zfl zpm
