page 66 — September 1940

Last night Christopher Wood at about 10 o’clock, came and talked to me for about 2 hours. He came to warn me about not making friends older than yourself, and then we talked for about an hour on religion. It was much easier to talk seriously in the dark. He had quite good views, although he has been confirmed etc. zfr zrl zop

 

Friday 13th

Started off by car, and then walked about 3 miles to a coastguard station in sight of Lands End Lighthouse … Martin [Wood] and I climbed a little and then we all went back via almost Lands End. It was raining quite hard by now and part of the way we were walking through a marsh …  zwk zss zmh

 

Monday 16th

First whole school day. … After that I finished reading the ‘First Hundred Thousand’ [a novel about the first volunteers to join the British army during the First World War]. zbn

 

Tuesday 17th

… in the afternoon there was Corps. I have joined. We marched, left and right wheeled, about turned etc. zct

 

Wednesday 18th

… We had a house run, in which we ran up the road, round the caves, walked to the Gannel, climbed along to the Fern Pit [quarry], and ran to the Bay. Quite fun. I went on the rocks with Martin Wood after tea. zsp zfr

Naval guns on the other side of Fistral Bay fired their practice shots in the afternoon. Hell of a bang. zmf zwp

 

Thursday 19th

… I got a letter from Daddy and Mommy some time lately. Daddy says you walk around picking up shrapnel; and Mommy’s, which came later, said Guy’s had been hit, all medical block stairs and landing removed; that no one was hurt, and all out in 23 mins, and Daddy had made an emergency escape plan.   ! zwp zfl zar zmw
