page 85 — January 1941

Sunday 12th

… At 11.5 Daddy, Miss Wilkinson, Tinker and I went for a walk. We went up the shepherds path, and at the bottom of Farm Hill we turned right and went round until we got to the Chichester road. Then we went up through the piggeries, and onto the Bishop’s ring hill. Just then the old pig man came up, to see who we were, and he had a long conversation with Daddy in very broad Sussex most of which I couldn’t understand. After we had been to Bishop ring, we re-crossed the road and went up Duncton Hill. Here we saw a buzzard, quite close to, flying very slowly with his head on one side, and his wing tips bending upwards. This is the first definite buzzard which I have seen. We passed the deserted searchlight post, which was in a pretty good mess. … zwk zpt zfl zop zwl zad

Mrs. Francis came up in the evening to thank Mommy for the chicken which she had given her, she has 3 people extra from Portsmouth, who became because of a bad raid without any food. zev zfd zar zfl

Little news.

My last day at home. It will be nice to know that Mommy at least is down here and safe. zfl zem

 

Monday 13th

I got up early [for a visit to Martin Wood near Oxford] and after breakfast I filled and started the car. While Mommy was taking Daddy to the station, I got ready, washed up etc. We got off at 9.30, there was a mist, which froze on the windscreen, and for about 15 miles, beginning at Cowdray, we had to have the windscreen open. … zmo zdc zwr

[At the Woods’] A large batch of evacuees came to tea. After which there were ‘Felix’ etc films. … zev zfm zfr zhy

 

Wednesday 15th

… After breakfast Mart and I went out and got four blankets from the [Womens] Institute … still snowing fairly hard. When we got back, we scraped anti-splinter paint off a window. … zwr zdc zfr

After tea we took several games and the cinema [equipment] down to a party for choir boys … zgn zso zfm zfr
