… after talking to Raymond, Nelson and George in the village, I went in to lunch at the Wolfe’s. Before lunch we sent (he was when I arrived) his steam engine—trying to churn milk. … zfr zev zhy zmd
After tea, we biked to Black Pond with some of the sailing boats, only mine went well and that ended up 12ft. out in some reeds—George fetched it. Then we were going to stalk the deer, but Tinker was attacked by one of the late Major C’s daughter’s dogs. Wednesday 29th
Last day at Glatting. In the morning we put up Margaret’s lab. hut in the orchard by the three pine trees with the help of Mr. Thurmore (late occupier) and Francis. After 11 o’clock I biked to the village where I shopped and sorted paper for 50 minutes. … zfl zsa zdc zsh zhk
David Wolfe came round, and after I’d finished drying up … we sent the steam engine burning wood (not very successfully). When the boys came we tested knots and morse (1 cigarette card for each letter more than five known) and then did 1st aid. [To London with my mother, en route to school, and staying over] …We caught a bus and after a quick look at Bumpus’ books, queued up for the film of ‘How green was my valley’ [a 1941 US film about a Welsh mining family at the turn of the 20th century]. … It was one of the loveliest films I’ve ever seen, and even Mommy cried in it—what zfl zfm zmh zsh
